Dear Forum Users,

I have found the previous threads on district identifiers very clear and helpful. Thanks! I am wondering if (sub-state) region identifiers are available in NFHS-3, which would allow identification of the geographic location at a finer level than state though not at as fine a level as district.

My understanding is that the stratified sampling entailed grouping similar districts within a state into regions. Table C-1 of the documentation at the link below specifies the set of districts that comprises each region.
http://www.measuredhs.com/pubs/pdf/FRIND3/FRIND3-VOL2.pdf

Are these region numbers embedded in the PSU identifiers or otherwise available to users?

Thank you,

Seema

Following is a response from DHS Expert, Fred Arnold, to a similar post (msg 1313):

The PSU numbers are unique within a single state, but they repeat across states, so you should look at the state code in conjunction with the PSU numbers when trying to determine how many PSUs there are.

Please let us know if this does not answer your question.

Thanks

Dear Liz,

Thanks. Unfortunately, the reply does not address my question.

My question isn't about unique identifiers for PSUs.

My question is whether it is possible to find out the sub-state region that a household (or PSU) belongs to. The documentation suggests that the sampling was done to be representative within a sub-state region. The state is available to users but the sub-state region is not. Previous responses on the forum have made clear that users cannot obtain information on the *district*. I am asking if users can obtain information in the sub-state region, which is bigger than a district and smaller than a state. The table I pointed to in my original question describes these regions and how they were used in the sampling design.

If the question is still unclear, please let me know. A yes or no answer would be very useful.

Thanks,
Seema

Seema, if I understand your question correctly, your are asking whether classifications of sub-state regions are available for NFHS-3. Unfortunately, it is not possible to determine administrative classifications below the State level. GPS data was not collected for the survey, and no District or Sub-State Region classifications are available for NFHS-3 due to the confidentiality requirements of HIV testing.

Please let me know if this did not answer your question adequately.

Thank you! That's too bad, but the reply does answer my question.
