I'm looking at the reasons for contraceptive discontinuation column (vcal_2) in the India DHS 2015-16 / NFHS-4 recode. The codes in this string seem largely recoded following the standard numbers and letters in the DHS 6 and DHS 7 recode manual, with the exception of five country-specific codes: P, Q, R, S and T.

I can't find any documentation on what these codes stand for, and would appreciate some clarification on what is meant by these seemingly country-specific codes. Thanks so much for your help on this.

Following is a response from DHS Senior Research Associate, Courtney Allen:

According to information from the data processing team, the country specific codes for reason for discontinuation in India DHS 2015-16 / NFHS-4 are as follows:

D => P = "Lack of sexual satisfaction"
L => Q = "Created menstrual problem"
M => R = "Gained weight"
G => S = "Did not like method"
N => T = "Lack of privacy for use"
