Hi i am doing my thesis on under 5 mortality using kdhs2014 and my outcome is whether child is alive or not. Am i right t use v208(live births in last 5 years) and b5(child alive or dead)? or any suggestions?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:
If you use the KR file you will have all children born in the past five years. Children with b5=1 are still alive and children with b4=0 have died. Age at death is given by b6 and (recoded) b7. Note that if age at death was 2 years or more, the values of b7 are (usually) recoded as 24, 36, or 48 months. These values should not be interpreted literally as months of age, at death, but as recoded values of 2, 3, and 4 years. Note that you will not match with the under-five death rates, and you are ignoring censoring, but you can analyze the determinants of under-five mortality with b5 and b7.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:
DHS does not use Excel to calculate under-five mortality rates, or anything else for that matter. We also do not encourage the calculation of these rates at smaller levels of aggregation than what is given in the state reports for the NFHS-4, because of the statistical uncertainty of the estimates.
