I'm using the Afghanistan 2010 standard DHS and Verbal Autopsy data. I want to merge the woman's data file with verbal autopsy data file (containing deceased children). But it seems that they can only be matched on household level. Do they have some linking variables that could be used to match them individual by individual?

Thanks

See qh308 in the verbal autopsy data which gives the line number of the mother and can be used (in conjunction with the cluster and household number) to match to the women's data.

What about linking the Children's data to the Verbal Autopsy data? Do they have some variables in common that could be linked one by one?

Thanks a lot

The data on the verbal autopsy are collected based on the identification of deaths in the household in the few (five?) years preceding the survey. However with the cluster number, household number and line number of the mother it should be possible to identify the children. Most women will have no more than one child who died in the time period. You also have the age at death in qh305 and the sex in qh306 that you may be able to match to q323 and q315 in the women's data. For those with two or more children who died you may be able to use other information to identify the matching child. It is probably not going to be perfect, but you should be able to get a match in the vast majority of matching cases (I haven't tried this, but it looks possible).

Hi there,

I am also trying to merge the VA file with the women's file in the AMS 2010 datasets. As I want to look at all the births including stillbirths i could not use qh305 or qh306 i the women's file. I have tried merging using cluster, hh and woman's line number as well either date of death (qv305f from VA and 322c & 324c in women's) or date of birth (qv303f and q317c& 324c from women's). I keep getting 116 cases that do not merge and it seems some of the dates from the women's file and the VA file do not match. Do you have any suggestion how to manage this and why the dates would not match?

thanks

Can you include your code so that we can review where the issues are?
