Hi, I am a highschool honors student and working on my year 12 project. I want to look at mosquito net (ITN) coverage over time in a country and need some direction to begin. I have a few questions if anyone can help guide me please.

1. Can I compare ITN ownership overtime between DHS surveys in a country? For example, country X has a DHS in 2007, 2012 and 2016. How do I look at how ITN ownership has changed over the time periods? Can I look at clusters over time? Regions over time? How do I do that?

2. Are there confidence intervals around a cluster's ITN ownership proportion? How do I obtain those?

3. If I am just looking at cluster data, I don't have to weight the data, correct? But if I want to look at ITN ownership by region, then I would need to weight it, yes?

Also, I'm new to SPSS and trying to teach myself!

Thank you for the help!

Hi Ellie,

Sounds like an ambitious project. I would recommend starting with StatCompiler.com, which has all the DHS data in aggregate form. You can find nets by clicking on "Choose Indicator" and then the "Complete List" tab. Net information is under the Malaria topic. You can look at nets over time by country and further break the analysis down by other variables, like Urban/Rural.

Once you have the breakdown you like, you can download the aggregated data and work with it in Excel or SPSS. It is already weighted. Unfortunately, StatCompiler doesn't calculate confidence intervals for most variables though.

Hope this helps.
