Good evening,

I am conducting a study using the variables V463A and MV463A, which are defined as "currently smokes cigarettes" (for women and men, respectively). What definition of "current cigarette use" do the DHS questionnaires use? For example, do they ask study participants if they have smoked in the past 24 hours, or in the past 30 days, or at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, etc.?

Following is a response from DHS Senior Research Associate, Lindsay Mallick:

The definition of the variable depends on how the questions are asked in a given survey. There are slight variations in wording and probes across different surveys. The question generally asks something similar to, "Do you currently smoke cigarettes or use tobacco?" If you are interested in a particular survey, you can refer to the questionnaire at the end of the final report. Additionally, in 2013, The DHS Program published a Comparative Report that inventoried the questions across surveys and presented estimates of tobacco use. You can find it here or https://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/CR31/CR31.pdf.

Thank you very much for your reply, Bridgette. This is what I wanted to know.
