I would like to double check some of the meanings of variables referenced in the SNMR4HFL.MAP file associated with the Men's Recode data for the Senegalese 2005 DHS survey. I am interested in the following two variables:

MG123 Circumcision should continue
1 Continued
2 Discontinued
3 Depends
8 DK
(m) 9 Missing
(na) NotAppl
MG124 Believes men want circumcision to continue
1 Continue
2 Discontinue
3 Depends
8 DK
(m) 9 Missing
(na) NotAppl

I think these are meant to correspond to the respondent's views of female circumcision practices because I think they correspond to these questions in the original questionnaire (FR177):

P. 466: Q.709 Pensez-vous que cette pratique doit être maintenue ou qu'elle doit disparaître ?
P. 466L Q.710 Pensez-vous que les femmes tiennent à ce que cette pratique soit conservée ou au contraire, pensez-vous qu'elles sont favorables à son abandon ?

Which are themselves prefaced with this:

P.466. Q.702 Dans certains pays, il existe une pratique qui consiste à couper une partie des organes génitaux externes des filles. Avez-vous déjà entendu parler de cette pratique?

I would like to check this against the recode manual but I can't find a reference to these variables in any of the recode manuals that I've found. The survey itself is DHS-IV. I am also confused about the fact that Q.710 references women's views on circumcision whereas the short description of MG124 is of the respondent's beliefs about men's attitudes.

Is there any other information available about these variables?

Many thanks in advance for your help and apologies if I am missing something obvious,

LD

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

The variables mg123 and mg124 come from the survey of men. The questions on FGC asked of men are parallel to those asked of women in the survey of women. In the MR data file (SNMR4GFL.dta, for Stata) the variable names match with those in the IR data file, but with the letter "m" at the front of the variable name. The first variable is about the man's own attitude and the second question is about his perception of men's attitudes in general.

Hi Bridgette,

Many thanks to you and Tom for that reply, that is helpful. I am still a little unclear though. Would you mind clarifying the following:

1) Is there documentation available detailing how variables in SNMR4HFL (such as MG124) were generated (coded) from specific questions in the questionnaire for FR177 (such as Q.710)?
2) Did Q.710 get included in the final recoded dataset as a variable?

The reason that I'd like to double check these before including the MG variables in my analysis is that I cannot find a question in FR177 which asks men about their perception of men's attitudes in general. However, I can find a question which asks men about women's attitudes in general (Q.710). On the other hand, I can't find a variable in SNMR4HFL corresponding to Q.710.

Is there any chance that MG124 corresponds to Q.710?

The wording of Q710 in FR177 is: " Pensez-vous que les femmes tiennent à ce que cette pratique soit conservée ou au contraire, pensez-vous qu'elles sont favorables à son abandon? "

Many thanks again for your help and apologies in advance if I am missing something obvious.

Laurence

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

You have identified a potential flaw in the report and the data file. It does appear that men were not asked about their perception of men's attitudes toward FGM/C. We are looking into this and someone will contact you and post something on the forum. It is possible that a question number and a variable number were mismatched. In the meantime, please do not use mg124.

Thanks for asking about this!

Hi Bridgette and Tom,

Ok, and many thanks for looking into it. I'll wait to here regarding MG124.
