For the DHS questionnaires I have noticed that the responses are primarily coded with numbers but some are coded with letters -- like the following question: "What do you usually do to make the water safer to drink?" Boil = A; add bleach = B, etc. Why do you use letters rather than numbers for some questions?

Following is a response from DHS Project Director, Sunita Kishor:

Alphabets are used for multiple response questions (respondent can provide more than one answer), and numbers are used for single, unique response questions.
