Hi,

I assume you are referring to sibling listing in the maternal mortality module. It is not quite clear; you may also be referring to the birth history. Below what you would need when referring to the sibling listing:

First you would need a survey with the maternal mortality module implemented, for example Zimbabwe DHS 2015.
Then take variables:

MMC1: Number of siblings of respondent (add one, the respondent, for total sibship size)

and

MMC2: Number of siblings born before respondent's birth

Then should have what you need.

Good luck with you analysis.

In that case you would use total number of children ever born in V201, the date of birth of the child in B3 (or you could also use B18 or B19 if available (only in very recent surveys)) and compare that to her/his brother/sisters.

You would take B3 of the child you want to know the number of older brothers/sisters for. You then look, in the birth history, how many brothers/sisters have a value of B3 smaller than the child you want to know the number of older brothers/sisters for.

Easier than that even would be to use the birth order of the child (BORD). You then know directly the total number of older children. Please note that there are twins (or even triplets) also.

Actually there is no computation involved. You can take directly the value from variable BORD. This will tell you the birth order and with that the number of older siblings, if any.

Please look at a variable called V201 for children ever born of the respondent. When looking at total number of siblings of the respondent, please look for a variable called MMC1. Good luck with your analysis.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Please elaborate some more. What is it you exactly want to do?

Household members in DHS in general are defacto, or those who slept in the household the night preceding the survey. It will not be possible to get to complete sibling listings that way. Relationship structures will not always be clear and members of a sibship may be living outside the household also. This kind of analysis will be more meaningful using a sibling listing when a maternal mortality module is implemented or when using a birth or pregnancy history from one respondent.

I am going to this calculation on birth order one who is having one male and female child. can you give me suggestion to right approach for computing or some other way.
