Hey all,

I am using Brazil data (DHS 1996). I do need to create the variable "family arrangement".
It`s seems to be derived from "relationship to head" variable.

I have 18 variables related to relationship to household head (HV101$01 until HV101$18) (18 is the maximum number of people in a household). So it allows different combinations.

Can you help me? Do you have a syntax for this?

Dear Flávia,
What do you mean by "family arrangement"? Are you trying to figure out HH composition (e.g. # adults vs. # children) or something else (e.g. female-headed household)?

It would be more useful for us if you can be more specific about what it is you are trying to accomplish.

Yes, I am trying to figure out HH composition. Like this:

1- childless couple;
2- couple with children;
3- lone-parent families
4- other family arrangement

It`s derived from "relationship to head" (hv101$01 - hv101$18) variable, isn´t it?

Here is a response from one of our Senior Data Processing Specialists, Noureddine Abderrahim.

It is best to use the persons (or household members) file to produce the "family arrangement". You won't have to deal with the index. All members of the household are treated the same way.
