I'm attempting to make comparisons over time at the commune-level data for Haiti's DHS surveys in 1995, 2000, 2006, and 2012 data sets (I'm specifically using HTPR31FL.DTA, HTPR42FL.dta, HTPR52FL.DTA, HTPR61FL.DTA).

I'm looking for one or both of the following:

1) a key that provides the names of the geographic administrative levels represented by the 108 unique values for "shcommun" in 1995's HTPR31FL.DTA, the 108 unique values for "shcommun" in 2000's HTPR42FL.dta, and the 114 unique values for "shcommun" in 2006's HTPR52FL.DTA

2) if (1) is not available, code in stata to link the commune level data throughout for all four sets of data.

Many thanks!

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

The commune is the third-level administrative unit in Haiti (level 1 is a department and level 2 is an arrondissement). At present, Haiti has 145 communes. Most of the units at this level include only one or two clusters (hv001 or hv021) and many communes are not represented at all in DHS surveys. The sample was not intended to be representative at that level. We do not have the names or labels of the communes that DO appear in each sample, which would be needed for them to be linked across surveys. That's unfortunate for your purposes. You can link the departments (hv024 or v024) in each survey but not the level 2 or level 3 units.

Unfortunate, but thank you for the clarification!

Tom,

Could you take a look at the other question I posted on the Haiti DHS data (or perhaps flag it for someone who might be able to help)? Even at the national and district levels I'm having trouble replicating the reported tables. Thanks!
