This is the question used to collect information about diarrhea in children under 5 in the 2013 Nigerian survey:
514) Has (NAME) had diarrhea in the last 2 weeks?
YES 1
NO 2 (GO TO 525)
DON'T KNOW (GO TO 525)
The survey form did not include include any definition of what constituted diarrhea, so diarrhea in children reported in the survey was whatever Nigerian mothers of small children considered the illness to be.
If you want to check question wording for a variable in future, or want to see if some definition of a condition was given prior to a question, you can check the "Survey Text" tab for variables in IPUMS-DHS (or, of course, check the question wording in the questionnaire at the end of a final report).
