Dear Liz-Dhs,

I am using the 94 DHS from Côte d'Ivoire and will appreciate if you can provide me with the names of the departments associated with the variable sdept. The codes (1 to 50) are given but i am interested in the names of the departments in 1994 to be able to align them with another data set.

The numbers in sdept are survey-specific, so we do not know if they correspond to any official codes for departments. An alternative approach in order to find the department name would be to use the GPS coordinates for each cluster to extract the department name from a geographic shapefile of the 1994 department boundaries. This approach is limited by the fact that our GPS coordinates are displaced (up to 2km for urban clusters and 5km for rural clusters), so the GPS coordinates are not guaranteed to fall within the same department as was originally sampled. A more detailed explanation of this specific problem and guidance on how to account for it is in chapter 5 of our SAR8 report (pdf link: http://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/SAR8/SAR8.pdf).
