Dear DHS Staff, my research question is to explore the predictors of breastfeeding initiation in children under 6 months of age among the Ethiopian population. I am a new user of DHS data and I am still getting used to the recoding variables. I have few questions that need to be clarified.
1. As I am looking at general predictors (wealth index, maternal occupation, education, child's sociodemographic information), Can I just use the child's dataset or do I need to merge datasets like child and household together.
2. As I am looking at children below 6 months of age, can you please tell me how to exclude other children from the data (using SPSS).
Hope you can help me get started by answering these questions.
Thanks,
Kind regards,
James

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:
Quote:You can do this analysis with just the KR (child) file. It includes almost all of the characteristics of the mother and the household as "v" variables. The age of a living child is given in months with hw1. I do not use SPSS, but you would use a statement such as "select if hw1<=6".
