Thank you for your message. Participation in the 2008 Nigeria DHS was voluntary, as it is with all DHS surveys. The interviewers were trained to read the consent statements found at the beginning of each of the Household, Women's, and Men's Questionnaires. In Nigeria, respondents were also given information about the survey with contact information for the survey implementers, should they have further questions about the survey. This component was compulsory in order for the National Health Research Ethics Committee in Nigeria to grant approval of the survey. There was no compensation to respondents for participation in the survey. The cartographers who conduct the household listing prior to the survey meet with community leaders prior to the survey being conducted. Prior to commencing data collection in all the different areas of the country, information about the survey is conveyed to possible respondents via radio, television, and print media messages. Additionally, the fieldwork supervisors and teams meet with community leaders upon entering a cluster for the first time. Interviewers make several attempts to contact households and eligible female and male respondents in order to conduct and complete interviews.
