Hi. I wanted to re-create the homemade fluids variable for diarrhoea treatment. I'm using the Kenya 2014 DHS dataset. Could you please advise?
Also, I see the questionnaire asks about sugar salt solution (question 522b in the women's questionnaire). Which variable captures this question? I see variable m55e is labeled "first 3 days, given sugar/salt solution".

Dear User,
Quote:(question 522b in the women's questionnaire). Which variable captures this question?
The recode variable which captures this information from Q522B in the Kenya DHS 2014 is a standard recode variable H14. Since H14 is a standard recode variable and Kenyan DHS 2008-09 has data for this variable, you will find H14 in the Kenya DHS 2008-09 dataset.
Thank you!

Hi Liz,
I used variable H14, but my estimate does not match the estimates in the report in Table 10.7. The estimate for homemade fluids is 50.5% in the DHS 2008-09 report and 57.3% in the DHS 2014 report.
I used the following Stata codes to estimate use of homemade fluids and got 25.9% and 28.7% using the DHS 2008-09 and DHS 2014 child recode files, respectively.
gen weight=v005/1000
svyset v021 [pw=weight], strata(v022)
svy : proportion h14
Could you elaborate on how the homemade fluids estimates were calculated in the DHS reports or what the definition of homemade fluid is in the report?
Thanks!
Felix
