All adult respondents are asked "How long have you been living continuously in (NAME OF THE CURRENT PLACE OF RESIDENCE)?" How is the name generated and in how much detail?

Particularly what we are trying to figure out is whether the respondent is asked about the current city, say Mumbai, or a particular part/neighborhood of the city. I realized that in the original DHS surveys this question was included to create an index of rural to urban migration, but given the growth of mega-cities I was wondering if it still only asks about the city. We need the information to try to establish migration in and out of the slum areas that are surveyed in NFHS-3.

In rural areas, the village name is substituted for (NAME OF CURRENT PLACE OF RESIDENCE). In urban areas, the place of residence is the neighborhood, not the entire city.

Thank you very much for the fast response. Two quick follow-up questions:

1. So, if somebody is currently living in a slum and respond that they are born in the neighborhood we can be relatively confident that they have lived in the slum their entire lifewith the potential caveat that the area may have become a slum in-between their birth and the survey date?

2. Is there any information on how large a neighborhood is (sq km, population, etc)?

1. It's correct that if someone is currently living in a slum area and they report that they have always lived in that neighborhood that it is likely that they have lived in a slum their whole life, but as you correctly point out, the area might not have been a slum at some point during their life.

2. There is no definition of what constitutes a neighborhood.
