Dear DHS,

The latest update to the Malawi 2013 - 2014 data (MWFC6KFLSP.DTA) includes the records for the 83 facilities that were unable to complete the assessment for various reasons. However, the accompanying location data do not appear to include coordinates for these facilities. It would be helpful to have these coordinates to know where uncertainty in mapping the system is located. Were these coordinates collected? If so, can they be made available?

Thank you,

Hannah

A response from GIS expert, Trinadh Dontamsetti,
Quote:

Dear Hannah,

While GPS data for SPA facilities is collected for all facilities that respond to the SPA survey, facilities that were either closed prior to the attempt to survey them or those that refused to participate in the survey (even if they retroactively decide to do so) are exempt from the release of their respective GPS data. The 83 facilities in question were either closed or refused to respond to the survey, and as such we cannot make this data available. More information regarding GPS data for SPA surveys can be found in the DHS Spatial Analysis Report 10: http:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-SAR10-Spatial-Analys is-Reports.cfm

Hi Hannah,

It obviously has some potential issues and involves various assumptions, but perhaps you could approximate these missing facilities by geospatially linking/matching facilities from Malawi's health facility registry databases (MOH: http://zipatala.health.gov.mw/facilities and GitHub: https://github.com/BaobabHealthTrust/master-facility-list) to those in the SPA. As applicable, you could subset to facilities built before ~2013/2014 (they presumably would be in the frame) and test if omitting ones listed as non-functional spatially link to any of the included SPA facilities.

A colleagues has been developing code for such geospatial matching based on proximity of GPS coordinates (=< 0.01 km); we're more than happy to share if that's potentially helpful!

All the best,
Nancy
