Categorization of Occupations

Professional/technical/managerial
Clerical
Sales and services
Skilled manual
Unskilled manual
Domestic service
Agriculture
Specifically, the ones I have questions about are "sales and services", and the difference between "skilled" and "unskilled" manual and where Professional/technical comes in. Just wondering if you have any quick guidance that you might give your data collectors or your data entry folks to guide them in this. I have things like "hairdresser" and "tailor" and I'm not sure where to put them. Thanks for your help. I'd be lost without this forum!

One of our experts, Mr. Trevor Croft, suggested you take a look at the International Standard Classification of Occupation (ISCO) Codes http://www.ilo.org/public/english/bureau/stat/isco/isco08/, which we prefer to use if possible. We use the 2 digit codes where possible. These pages provide details of the coding of each occupation into the two digit codes.
