I am trying to merge male and female data for Zambia to create a couple file. Following the DHS documentation on merging, I've renamed the variables v001,v002 and v034 to mv001,mv002 and mv034_1, and sorted them on both. When I want to merge 1:1, Stata gives message that mv001, mv002 and mv034_1 do not uniquely identify observations in the master data. I am not sure where i have gone wrong.
Your assistance on this will be greatly appreciated.

This dataset has one record for every couple. It contains data for married or living together men and woman who both declared to be married (living together) to each other and with completed individual interviews (questionnaires). Essentially the file is the result of linking the male recode and the female recode data files, based on whom they both declared as partners. The unit of analysis (case) in this file is the couple.
