Children under 5 in Women's File
https://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.phpindex.php?t=rview&goto=22780&th=10984#msg_22780
I was hoping I can get some help re-coding for women with children under 5. I am using the 2016 South African DHS. I have CEB and number of surviving children but specifically need a dichotomous indicator of women who have any children under the age of 5.
Thank you so much for any help or hints.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
This is a little tricky. There may be another way, but here is one way to do it. "temp.dta" is a sorted version of the KR file that has to be saved somewhere.
use... ZAKR71FL.DTA
keep if b5==1
keep v001 v002 v003
egen living_child_under5=seq(), by(v001 v002 v003)
keep if living_child_under5==1
sort v001 v002 v003
save e:\DHS\DHS_data\scratch\temp.dta, replace
use... ZAIR71FL.DTA
sort v001 v002 v003
merge v001 v002 v003 using e:\DHS\DHS_data\scratch\temp.dta
replace living_child_under5=0 if living_child_under5==.
tab living_child_under5,m

Please allow me to ask another question:
I am trying to study determinants of women's labor force participation (and employment) but I have only currently employed v714. Would you by any chance have suggestions on how to approach re-coding labor force participation (e.g. 0= unemployed; 1= employed and 2= not participating) or any other suggestions you may be able to help me with.
Thank you so much!

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
If you do "tab v717 v714" you will see that some of the women who are not currently working (on v714) do give an occupation (on v717). A possible interpretation would be that such women are in the labor force but not employed. However, I expect there will be some classification error.
