Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Soumaila Mariko:

The existing ethnic categories in the data file (Benin) is based on the respondent self-declaration to the question Q114 "What is your ethnicity?" (Q114 in both women and men questionnaires). However, the response categories proposed in the questionnaires were based on results from previous surveys in the country and updated by the Benin nationals to reflect the situation in the country at the time of the survey.

For instance, in each response category in the questionnaire: question Q114, the nationals have chosen to include all other ethnic groups related to that category of ethnicity. According to that rule, "ADJA" includes, as stated in the questionnaire ("ADJA ET APPARENTÉS", [CODE=11]), all other ethnic groups related to ADJA ("ADJA AND RELATED", [CODE=11]) such as the "GUN", etc. This rule applies also to the rest of the ethnic categories in the questionnaire.
