Dear all

We are using the Nigeria (DHS 2008) to generate mortality indicators. As we are analysing several surveys simultaneously using a Stata code, we systematically use the variable v024 to identify the countries' regions, which is standard for most surveys.

We identified two different variables (v101 and v024) in the Nigeria (DHS 2008) dataset. We used the v024 to identify the regions, but we could not produce estimates comparable to the results published on the report and Statcompiler. It seems that the calculations were based on the v101 instead of the v024. Comparing these variables, we also realised that the codes of the "south west" and "south south" regions are switched.

Does anybody know whether the published results related to region were based on the v101 variable?

Many thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Giovanny.

Dear Giovanny,
Yes, the calculations in the final report were based on v101 and the state codes.
I looked in the documentation distributed with the data and there was an alert regarding the regions. You are correct. The state labels had been interchanged. I suggest downloading the latest version of the Nigeria DHS 2008 data, the NGIR52 file. In Nigeria 2008 we do use v101 for the tabulations and the two are supposed to be the same (except that v024 was added for incomplete interviews too). In fact that is why v024 exists just so the region information was available for incomplete interviews.

Please feel free to post again if this does not answer your question.
Thank you
