I am trying to match districts sampled in the 1991 and 1996 DHS with district-level data from another dataset. Specifically, we are using the DHS to construct rates of intermarriage among people of different ethnicities. I realize the DHS is not designed to be representative at the district level but we figure we can still look at the intermarriage rates among respondents in different districts in the sample and compare those to othe district-level covariates. My issue is that I can't find labels for the district indicator variable. The district ID just ranges from 1-8, so the district numbers cannot correspond to unique districts. Region labels ARE included, so the issue is needing to know, within each region, how the district codes were assigned. I have just requested GPS datasets, which I think should be a good workaround, though it does not appear that GPS coordinates were collected in the 1991 or 1996 DHS. Hence my workaround would only work if the sampled districts remain the same and are coded the same in 1999 as they were in 1991 and 1996.

Thanks!
Ruth

Dear User,
For confidentiality reasons we do not distribute district level data. However, in the front of the final report, on the citation page, you can find contact information for the implementing agency. They may be able to assist depending on your need for analysis.
Thank you!
