As of April 2018, IPUMS-DHS includes all the Standard DHS Surveys (117) from 28 countries, including the most recent surveys from India and Ethiopia.

The 28 countries cover nearly all of Africa and North Africa, along with Yemen, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

IPUMS-DHS users can select their unit of analysis: Women, Children under 5, Births, or Household members. All household variables are accessible when women are the unit of analysis. All women and household variables are accessible when Children-under-5 or Births are the unit of analysis.

Users' favorite features:
• Fully integrated geography across country surveys.
• Small-area contextual variables (related to environment, agriculture, conflict, and demographics) attached to individual records.
• The ability to easily create a fully integrated and harmonized data file (extract) using data from multiple surveys.
• Complete documentation accompanying every variable, including skip patterns, survey text (in original language and translated into English), and more.
• Everything harmonized without losing any detail, plus comparability discussions for every variable.
• The ability to limit download to variables of interest, with a simple system to add new variables at any time.

Not in IPUMS-DHS yet, but coming:
• Men as unit of analysis.
• Some country-specific variables.
• The remaining standard DHS samples.
