Hi!
I have looked at data from the data set MWFC6JFLSR. This is data from the inventory questionnaire from the Malawi SPA 2013. In some variables equipment is not available in the bigger hospitals which we think is strange. This made us think of how the data was collected. So my question is: what were the instructions to the data collectors when they collect data in bigger hospitals? Did they actively approach the emergency department or did they only collect data in other parts of the hospital in the genereal opd? Emergency equipment may only be available in the emergency department so have they approached the emergency department? Is it possible to get to know which person or department the collectors have approached?

Best regards,

Cecilia Lindsjö

Dear User, Attached is the Interviewer's Manual for the Malawi SPA 2013. The questionnaires are contained in one of the appendices in the final report. The report can be downloaded here https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-SPA20-SPA-Final-Repo rts.cfm
Also, a response from SPA specialist, Dr. Hamdy Moussa:

Here is some basic background information about 2013-14 Malawi SPA that may help addressing your question:

- 2013-14 Malawi SPA was designed to be a census of all formal-sector facilities in Malawi.
- 119 Hospitals were included in the sample frame and all 119 hospitals were selected to be surveyed.
- Out of the 119 hospitals, SPA teams successfully surveyed 116 hospitals; 3 hospitals were not surveyed for different reasons (1 refused to be assessed, 1 closed and 1 was unreachable).
- The objective of the 2013-14 Malawi SPA was to assess the availability and readiness of basic and essential health services, including maternal and newborn care and child health, family planning, reproductive health services, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as services for certain infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, STIs, malaria, and TB), in Malawian health facilities.
- Emergency service/department was not assessed as stand-alone service/department in 2013-14 Malawi SPA.
- In spite of the fact that 2013-14 Malawi SPA did not assess emergency service/department as stand-alone service/department but still 2013-14 Malawi SPA included some emergency related indicators/questions like 24-Hours staff coverage, emergency transportation etc.
- The basic equipment/supplies items were assessed in the general OPD area or in the service delivery sites (family planning, antenatal care, child health services, delivery and newborn care, etc.) but were not assessed in the emergency department.
