Hi everyone,

I have a quick and perhaps simple question. What are the characteristics DHS used to determine a person as head of household?
Is it the bread winner? The decision maker? Or a combination of various aspects? If this is documented could I please have the link to the pdf?

Thank you

Dear User,
From the Interviewer's manual:
Quote:

household head. The person who is identified as the head of the household has to
be someone who usually lives in the household. This person may be acknowledged as the head on the
basis of age (older), sex (generally, but not necessarily, male), economic status (main provider), or
some other reason. It is up to the respondent to define who heads the household. There generally
should not be a problem with this.

You can find the Interviewer's Manual on our website: http:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSM1-DHS-Questionna ires-and-Manuals.cfm
