Dear All,

I am working on health insurance coverage for Rwanda using the Rwanda 2014-15 DHS. I am trying to reproduce table 2.15 from the survey report but I cannot health insurance information in either the male or female recode files. Also, the individual recode documentation indicates that health insurance information was collected at the household level. Therefore, how was table 2.15 in page 56 and 57 of the final Rwanda 2014-15 DHS survey report generated?

Dear User,
The health insurance questions for the Rwanda DHS 2014-15 survey are non standard and are located in the household. They are survey specific and start with the letters SH. The number corresponds to the number in questionnaire. For example SH21 corresponds to QH21 in the household questionnaire. You can find these variables in the frequencies. I would look at the weighted frequencies.
SH21: Covered by health insurance - all occurrences
SH22: Main type of health insurance - all occurrences
SH123E: Plan to get insurance
Hope this helps. If you have additional questions, please feel free to post again.
Thank you!

Dear Liz,

Thank you for your reply. My question is how the household based data was transferred to individual based data in the form of health insurance coverage in Men and Women? Correct me if I am wrong, but only the household questionnaire contains health insurance information - Which indicates the number of households with at least one member covered.

However, table 2.15 presents "Health insurance among adult women and men". So how was the health insurance variable extracted from the household dataset and attached to an individual level as in Men and Women as presented in Table 2.15?

I have tried to use the sex of household member (hv104) variable in the household data file but the numbers do not tally. Using this variable this results into 12699 observations while the number of men presented in the table is 6217, whereas that for women is 13497.

Dear User,
If the adult individual (man/woman) in the household was eligible to be interviewed in the individual questionnaires, that information from the household regarding insurance would transfer as well and the variables associated with insurance would be the country/survey specific variables I mentioned. (if the individual was successfully interviewed). Does that help? I will also check with one of our experts, but am hoping that will shed some light on your query.
Thank you!

A response from Senior Data Processing Specialist, Ladys Ortiz:

The health insurance coverage was asked to ALL members in the household. The variables are SH21/SH22 and they are part of the PR file (member data file). The women (IR) and men (MR) data files need to be merged with the members data file (PR) In order to attach the insurance coverage variables to each individual interviewed.

Thanks

Ladys

I am also interested in this same issue. Did you finally manage to attach insurance to an individual? If so please share the Stata code you used to merged and have the insurance occurrence. I have tried several times and it seems am not getting anywhere.

regards
