Good morning,

I am try to understand if the negative effect I found on "ideal number of children" (V614) is driven by a reduction in desire for boys or girls. Thus, I was using variable V627 and V628 (respectively, number of desired boys and girls).

Then, I found that V629 is "desired children of either sex". How is this different from V614, total number of desired sex, irrespectively of sex?

Thank you

A response from Dr. Tom Pullum,

For this type of question, go to the main report on the survey (see the Publications tab at www.dhsprogram.com). Look at both the relevant chapter and the questionnaire, which is in an appendix (you can search the questionnaire for keywords). If you cannot figure it out, please let us know which survey you are working with. It's unfortunate that v614 and v629 have such similar variable names, but there is a difference.
