The Malawi 2014-15 final report states that the sample is representative by 28 districts. In the IR file, there is no district variable to allow you to make estimates at this level. In the HR file, there is "shdist". However, there are 32 districts under this variable, as some districts are split into city/rural.

I would like to make estimates for the 28 regions, to match the final report and therefore have 2 questions:

1) Is there a variable for the 28 districts? If there is only "shdist", should I go ahead with merging the city/rural splits?
2) "Mzuzu city" is included in "shdist". It is not clear which district this should be merged with, as it is not listed by itself as one of the 28 districts?

Following is a response from Senior DHD Data Specialist: Albert Themme.

There is no variable other than "SHDIST" to define the 28 districts, so you should go ahead with merging the following:

SHDIST = 107 "Mzuzu City" should merge with 105 "Mzimba"
SHDIST = 210 "Lilongwe City" should merge with 206 "Lilongwe"
SHDIST = 315 " Blantyre City" should merge with 305 "Blantyre"
SHDIST = 314 "Zomba City: should merge with 303 "Zomba"

This variable does not exist in the child recode - you will find it in the household recode or household members recode files. If you need it in the child recode, you would have to merge the datasets.
