Now I'm working with Indonesia 2012 survey data in order to estimate adult (maternal) mortality. The method I'm working with is indirect and based on orphanhood information. Is there any recommendation what dataset recode I must use ? What variables that I must consider in that dataset recode ?

Thanks,
Stephen

It is not clear what you are trying to do, but in most DHS surveys questions on orphanhood of children under age 18 are asked in the household questionnaire, however, the Indonesia 2012 questionnaires did not include these questions, so I don't believe there are any questions or orphanhood you can use. Rather, did you mean the sisterhood method?

Thank you for the reply. I know about sisterhood method but that's not what I mean. What I'm trying to do is estimate adult mortality in Indonesia using indirect method. In "Tools for Demographic Estimation" by Tom Moultrie et al (I'm sorry I can't upload the pdf due to file size limitation), there's 2 indirect estimation method to estimate adult mortality. In chapter 22, there's orphanhood method. In chapter 23, there's estimation based on siblings data or well known as sisterhood method. What I'm asking is, when I'm going to estimate adult mortality based on orphanhood method using DHS Datasets, do you have any recommendation of what dataset recode I've to used ?

I know the method, and I have the book, but to my knowledge the data needed were not collected in the Indonesia DHS 2012 (unless I'm missing it). Do you see the questions on whether the mother is alive in the questionnaires? (I'm not seeing them).

This method has been used with older surveys, around the time of DHS I and DHS II (up to about 1994), when questions were asked to each individual respondent on whether their mother and father were alive were asked, but these questions have not been used for many years to my knowledge.

Thank you for the information. I do really appreciate your help. I'll think to work with other method then.
