Dear DHS users,

I have two questions and I don't know if they have been asked elsewhere.

1) Why were there only under-three children in 1994 Côte d'Ivoire DHS while there were under-five children in 1998 and 2011 Côte d'Ivoire DHS?

2) What's the difference between ORC Macro, ICF Macro and ICF International?

Thank you.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Senior Specialist, Tom Pullum:

In most surveys, questions about child health have been asked about all children under five--that is, all children born in the past five years. In a few surveys a shorter interval was used, partly to reduce the costs and partly because it was thought the data would be more reliable for younger children. Five years is now the standard.

DHS is a project of USAID that is done under a contract with a for-profit company. There has been uninterrupted continuity of the group of people who work on the project, for more than 30 years, but the company that has the contract has occasionally been bought or has changed its name. ORC Macro was one such company. It changed its name to Macro, and then was bought by ICF. The unit of ICF that includes DHS is still, for some purposes, called ICF Macro. ICF in the meantime has become ICF International (I believe; both names are used here). There is also confusion about the "MEASURE" acronym. Some people still use the term "MEASURE DHS" but that's incorrect. MEASURE Evaluation, yes, but MEASURE DHS, no. We who are the worker bees also have a hard time keeping up with such subtleties.

Dear Bridgette-DHS,

I would like to ask you if I can cite you in my article as a person who provided me an information on the reason why there were only under-three children in the Côte d'Ivoire 1994 DHS.

Thanks a lot.
