Dear Sir,

Please I would want to know whether the variable VI66(iodine salt test) in the Children's recode file of the 2014 Ghana DHS is restricted to only households with children less than five years of age. This is because the frequency for V166 in the children's recode file of the 2014 Ghana DHS is less than the frequency for V166 in the household recode file.

Best regards,

Mustapha Immurana

Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

The variable V166 is part of the woman's file and it appears as many times as there are women in the data file. The source of this information depends on the survey. For Ghana DHS 2014 it comes from the household question 140 as shown in the final report. Variables from the woman's file are added to the children's file and will appear in the children's file as many times as there are children.

Please from your response, does it mean that the VI66 in the Ghana 2014 DHS children recode file refers to iodized salt test in only households with children under-five?. Thank You

Another response from Noureddine Abderrahim:

V166 refers to a woman's variable. Some women's variables are in fact imported from the household. Such as V166 which is derived from variable HV234 coming from the household. The children's file is related to births under five, born to the mother. The number of times that the variable is included in the children's file, corresponds to the number of births under 5. The children's file includes not only variables related to the children but also the women's variables. For this reason, V166 occurs in the children's file as many times as there are children. The variables in the women's file will occur as many times as there are women in the data file, including V166. The household variables in the household data file will occur as many times as there are households. Similarly, the household variables included in the woman's file will occur as many times as there are women.
