Hi,

I am currently working with 2011 Nepal DHS data (Children's Recode) file. I want to create two variables:

1. Mother's age at delivery: I believe that I can create this variable by subtracting B8 (child's age in years) from V208 (mothers age in years). Is this information directly available in the dataset?
2. Parity: Is the information on parity available in the dataset? or should I use V208 (No of births in the last 5 years) for this purpose?

I would really appreciate your suggestions.

Many thanks
Bibhu

1. For mother's age at delivery, your method above would not be accurate and would only working for living children. A better approach is to use:
gen mage_deliv = int((b3 - v011)/12)
where b3 is the CMC date of birth of the child and v011 is the CMC date of birth of the mother. The result of the difference is divided by 12 to convert to years.
2. Variable bord provides the birth order or parity at birth, however, note that for twins the two births will have different birth orders.
