Can HIV and MIS files be merged into one dataset? If so, what variables will need to be used to match?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Fred Arnold:

HIV, MIS, and Standard DHS surveys are different. Even if they occur in the same year, the samples are different and merges are not possible. However, they have many variables in common, and they can be appended for some purposes, so long as you keep a survey id so you know which survey is which.
