Hello Everyone,

I am working with the DRC DHS 2013-2014. The final report (https://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/FR300/FR300.pdf) mentioned

9030 children that have valid age, weight and height.

However,

1. When I considered the Child dataset and HW2 (weight) and HW3 (height) and removed the values (9994, 9995, 9996 and 9999 and the blank values) I found:

8397 children

2. In addition, when I considered B10 (Completeness of information for Child age) and selected only for B10=1 (Month and year - information complete), I found

8388 children

I am wondering if there are not other variables to be considered for valid age, height and weight. Could someone guide on the best way to handle this.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Antoine

Following is a response from Senior Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

The denominator of the DHS table 11.1 is based on the number of kids with valid z-scores, which includes in addition to a valid measurement, a valid value of the measurement based on the age and sex of the child.

Thank you for this guidance.

I then considered HW70 (Height for age standard deviation (according to WHO)) and below is the frequency table I ran. I still can't retrieve the 9030 children in Table 11.1 of the report

For example 8388-295-34 = 8059

Valid Z-scores(between -599 and 596): 8059
Height out of plausible limits (9996): 34
Flagged cases (9998): 295
Total: 8388
Missing (9999): 164
Sytem: 10164
Total missing: 10328
Total: 18716

Another response from Noureddine Abderrahim:

The data in the table 11.1 of the Congo DR 2013-14 is coming from the household Children's Height and Weight section, and is built by selecting only de-facto children.

Thank you much for all the responses.

I considered the household members (PR file) and selected the children with the following attributes:

HV103==1 (de facto members)
HC1<60 (under-fives)
HC70<=9990 (valid haz).

This leads to 8884 kids, different to the number in Table 11.1 of the report (9030).

Am I still doing wrong?

Another response from Noureddine Abderrahim:

8884 is the number of un-weighted cases. The figure shown in the report is weighted.
