Pakistan DHS district names [message #3584]

I am an undergraduate senior student and I am doing an economics thesis on the Polio Campaigns in Pakistan. I requested and received the Pakistan DHS data for 2006/07 and 2012/13.

Both these data sets have the district codes but no district names. I am hoping that I can get the names of the districts for each district codes in these data sets. This is important because I am doing my analysis on the district level.

I will really appreciate if you can provide me with the list of the districts that match the district codes. Without having the names of the districts, I cannot carry on with the study.

Following is a reply from Senior DHS Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

You might be able to get the names of the districts included in the survey from the implementing agency of the survey. DHS does not collect the name of the district since the code of the district is specific to the higher subdivision of the country and is unique across the data file. The contact information for the implementing agency can be found in the final report for each survey.

Dear Qayum,

District level analysis with any DHS dataset is not representative.
You cannot use DHS for district level analysis because its sample design does not represents the district therefor any statistics/indicator based on DHS for districts are not reliable.

For district level analysis you should have to opt for MICS which is easily available from UNICEF.

Dear Waqas,

Does Pakistan have a MICS survey which would show better representation of districts? I haven't seen this data with UNICEF, so would be helpful if you can explain how to get this data.

HI!

PSLMS (Pakistan SOcial living Standards Measurement Survey) was holding regularly by Pakistan Bureaue of Statistis (pbs.gov.pk) from 2004 to 2015. It provides district level estimates. MICS also gives dstruct level estimates but it does not hold same time in all regions of Pakistan. U can download MICS data from http://mics.unicef.org/surveys.
