Dear All,

I am interested to know the justification behind the size of the EAs in DHS.
In BDHS 2007, the survey used 361 EAs and the number increased for 2011(600 EAs).

Q1. How is the number determined (361 or 600)?
Q2. What was the justification behind increasing the number?

Thanks in advance.

Following is a response from our Senior Sampling Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

The sample size of Bangladesh DHS 2011 was much larger than the BDHS 2007 because the government of Bangladesh wanted more reliable estimates on immunization, anthropometry and childhood mortality rates (CMR) at regional level (moreso for CMR). Instead of producing CMR for the last 0-9 years at regional level like in all DHSs, the government requested CMR estimation for the last 0-4 years at national level, as well as at regional level.

The BDHS 2011 might be the only survey where DHS has produced CMR for the last 0-4 years at regional level. This mainly explains the considerable increase of the BDHS 2011 sample size, compared to BDHS 2007.

Thanks Ren and Bridgette. I really appropriate it.

The response from Ren helped me to understand the
logic behind the EA-size-scaling-up issue well.

Last week, I participated a workshop on sample size
determination for DHS, lectured by Mahmoud Elkasabi.
That was really helpful to me for understanding
other issues related to sampling and weighting.

Hope these helps from you will continue in future.

Thanks,
Sazzad
