hello again !
I am trying to use caste as SES variables, and realized that about 3% of values are missing
The caste variable in household datasets is SH48 and SH49;
value 993 "No caste/tribe" in sh48 becomes a missing value in sh49,
and there is value 4 "None of them" in variable sh49
What is the difference between "no caste/tribe" in sh48 (which equals to missing value in sh49) and "none of them" in sh49 ?

In the woman's questionnaire for NFHS-5, Question 115 asks "What is your caste or tribe?" The response codes are:
991 CASTE (Specify)
992 TRIBE (Specify)
993 NO CASTE/TRIBE
998 DON'T KNOW
(DON'T KNOW indicates that the respondent does not know her caste/tribe
NO CASTE/TRIBE indicates that the respondent said that she does not belong to any caste or tribe. If the respondent says NO CASTE/TRIBE, she skips the next question (WQ116).
WQ 116 asks "Do you belong to a scheduled caste, a scheduled tribe, other backward class, or none of these?" The response codes are:
1 SCHEDULED CASTE
2 SCHEDULED TRIBE
3 OBC
4 NONE OF THEM
NONE OF THEM means that the respondent says that she does not belong to a schedule caste, scheduled tribe, or OBC.
In the NFHS-5 final report tables, the castes, tribes are scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward class, other, and don't know. "Other" generally means that the respondent belongs to a caste/tribe, but not to a scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, or other backward class. That generally means that she belongs to a general class, which is usually a higher caste, but we cannot be certain about that since the only information we have is the response codes in the woman's questionnaire.

The education question on the household questionnaire is "What is the highest grade (NAME) completed. The education on the woman's and man's questionnaire is "What is the highest grade you completed?" In the education tables in the NFHS-5 final report, the standard education levels are, as follows:
No
schooling
<5 years
complete
5-7 years
complete
8-9 years
complete
10-11 years
complete
12 or more
years complete
Don't know/
missing
No specific question is asked on whether or not the respondent completed college. My understanding is that there is insufficient information on whether or not each respondent completed college.
