On behalf of the PMI Case Management Team: The validity of this question was studied in Zambia (Eisele, PLOS Med, 2013) and found to be not very reliable. However the study authors suggested repeating the validation in a different setting and the PMI team concurs. Suggest doing a validation in a couple other countries before determining whether to drop this question.

We also noticed that this question is colored pink to indicate it is only used in malaria endemic countries. However the other fever treatment questions are used everywhere. In fact, there should be no use of antimalarials without a test first, so anywhere where antimalarials might be dispensed; we would want to know about a confirmatory test first. Thus, this question should be standard along with the questions on treatments.
