Hello Sir/Ma,

Please, I need clarity on the selection of under-five mortality sample data from the child recode file of Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey Data set for 2013. Am currently working on my PhD data analysis,in which my focus is to measure the extent to which socioeconomic factors (Underlying factors of mortality) influences under-five mortality and what effect still remains if, proximate determinants are introduced using binary logistic Regression.

My dependent variable is B5 (if child is alive - (1)No (0) Yes).

I observe that all the children reported in the child recode file are below age five, none of them is above five years. My question is, am I to use the total sample size for the child recode from the NDHS (2013)dataset which is 31,482; considering the fact that other issues apart from mortality are contained in the file.

My second question is how do I handle missing values. Particularly for variables such as; Antenatal visits- M14, Type of cooking fuel-V161, Type of toilet facility- V116 and some others. I realized that by dropping these missing values my sample size reduces and eventually affects my dependent variable, which distort the analysis.

Please, what should be my sample size and how do I handle missing values. Thank you.
Thank you in anticipation

Dear User,
I suggest you first look at the Guide to DHS Statistics on our website. It can be found here:http:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs-questi onnaires-and-manuals.cfm
This publication is bookmarked and has information on calculating infant and child mortality. There is also a section on handling missing values. Th Under-five mortality rate calculation is on page 94. After reviewing the information if you still have questions, please feel free to post again.
Thank you!
