I am working on Ethiopian 2011 Women's dataset and I want information at zonal level, but I couldn't able to find the variable that has information at zonal level. For example variable v024 stand for region but, I couldn't find variable for zone. May you assist me how I could get the above variable? Or there is no variable at zonal level?
For clarity, in Ethiopia the largest administrative units are regions and divided into zones, and zones, divide in to weredas. Each wereda is further subdivided into the lowest administrative unit, called kebele. Then for census each kebele was subdivided into census enumeration areas (EAs). Please assist me how to get the variable that contains information in zonal level. Thank you all in advance.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Albert Themme:


I looked at the 2011 Ethiopia questionnaire and there is indeed no field for Zone and there is no information at the zonal level in the data files. Lower level geographical information is often not included in the questionnaire when HIV-status information is collected. However, I do believe that GIS information was collected for each cluster. The GIS information is generally scrambled to a certain extent, that means that the exact location of the cluster is randomly offset by a few kilometers, so even using the GIS information you can not be sure that exact location of the cluster falls within a certain zone.

Dear Albert, Indeed I appreciate for the quick and detail responses.

My plan was to perform spatial analysis in zonal level. I am thinking that if I do in regional level the area going to be large. Do I have any option to perform spatial analysis in small area?

Dear User,
Here is a response from one of our GIS experts, Mr. Matt Pagan,
You could use the GPS dataset, which includes latitude/longitude coordinates for the location of each cluster, to perform spatial analysis in a smaller area than the regions. You can spatially join the cluster points to a shapefile at the zonal level, but the small number of cases per region may be an issue. Also, keep in mind that the GPS cluster locations are randomly displaced: urban clusters up to 2km, and rural clusters up to 10km. The displacement may affect the accuracy of a spatial join.
