Dear all
Can some help with ideas on how to get physical sizes of the clusters contained in DHS.
I am working with DHS data from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for your post. Please see this other forum thread for some general information about the spatial dimensions of the enumeration areas (EAs) used for sampling http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&th=57&am p;start=0&S=ec2d88b675abff3e49ca8eecb81d9c64. An EA can be a city block or apartment building in urban areas, while in rural areas it is typically a village or group of villages.

If this has not answered your question adequately, please reply.

Dear Josh
Many thanks for the response. It is okay so far because the issue I had is related to a suggestion I got from one of the reviewer on the paper I am writting using the DRC-DHS. The suggestion was to make sure the clusters it contains are not so wide that one can assume the existence of exerternalities related to access to sanitation facilities. Based your reaction and the details on the link youprovided I think this is the case.
Many thanks once more

Dear Josh
Sorry for this additional disturbance. Can you please help me know whether there are water-born disease other than diarrhea in the DHS and in which module to find them?
Many thanks in advance

Dear User,
I checked with one of our experts, Dr. Joanna Lowell:
Quote:
Guinea Worm and Schitosomasis are waterborne

Any waterborne disease questions other than diarrhea would be country-specific in our surveys. I did a quick check and found that in the Nigeria DHS 2008 survey they did ask questions in the household regarding tropical diseases.
Onchoceriasis
QH34 In the last 12 months has (NAME) taken any drug for River Blindness [LOCAL TERM], a disease that causes itchy skin, lumps in the skin and blindness.

Lymphatic Filariasis
QH35 In the last 12 months has (NAME) taken any drug for elephantitis [LOCAL TERM], which causes swelling in the arms and legs?

Guinea Worm
QH36 In the last 12 months have you ever seen a worm emerging from a skin lesion (boil or blister) on (NAME?) This disease is called Guinea Worm.

Schistosomiasis
QH37 In the last 12 months has (NAME) taken any drug for bilharazia [LOCAL TERM], which causes blood in the urine.

Out of these these Guinea Worm and Schitosomasis are waterborne.

In the Peru Continuous surveys QH109 they tested drinking water looking for levels of bacteria.
In Liberia DHS 2013 some water samples were tested but that was separate from the DHS and is not part of the final report.

Dear Liz

Many thanks for all the details. The vairables seem not to be part of DHS for D.R. Congo but at least I know they are available in some other countries.

Thanks once more.
