Hi all.

I am trying to compute the timing of first postnatal checkup (to match the DHS Final Report Table, i.e. Table 9.8 in the latest DHS-VI format), but it has proved difficult matching the values for 2013 Nigeria DHS. I can match these values for previous DHS versions (e,g, 2008 Nigeria DHS) but the computation have changed in the latest DHS VI format, as some recode variables used in previous DHSs have been dropped. I need to correctly match the Final Report values to be sure my codes are correct and can be applied to sub-samples of the new dataset.

I will be happy if the Stata codes can be shared with me.

Here is a response from one of our data processing experts, Claudia Marchena:

Table 9.8 about the timing of first postnatal checkup for the mother changed among DHS phase 5 and 6:

1. For Nigeria DHS 2008 the population is women 15-49 giving birth in the five years preceding the survey, while for Nigeria DHS 2013 are women 15-49 giving births in the last two years preceding the survey (less than 24 months).
2. Variables M63 and M67 were dropped and instead variable M51 is used to calculate the timing.
3. Another column was added in the latest table definition for table 9.8 that shows the percentage of women with a postnatal check up in the first two days after births. This column uses variable M51 as well, and variable M52 to filter for health professionals only providing the postnatal checkup.

We do not have Stata code within the data processing group as our tables are all done in CSPro, but we hope the explanation above will help with your query. If this does not answer your query, please feel free to post again. Thank you!
