I been working with the 1998 and 2015-2016 Guatemala DHS and I have some doubts about the sample variables.

For 1998:
v022 is "sampling stratum number"
v023 is "sample domain"
When comparing these two variables show different values for each row or conducted survey

While for the 2015-2016 DHS
v022 is "sample strata for sampling errors
v023 is "stratification used in sample design"
When comparing these two variables, they show the same value.

I was expecting to find the same description in the 2015-2016 DHS, I need to know the sample domain and the stratum. Is the V023 for the 2015-2016 DHS correct? Is there another variable for sample domain in the 2015-2016 DHS?

Thank you

Following is a response from DHS Senior Sampling Specialist, Mahmoud Elkasabi:

As documented in both surveys reports, departments by urban/rural were used for stratification. The difference between the two surveys is related to a recent change in variables V022 and V023.

In the 1998 GDHS, V022 was reserved for the sampling strata, and V023 was reserved for the sample domain, which is the departments.

In the 2014-15 GDHS, V022 is reserved for the sample strata that was used for sampling error estimation, which is the same as the sampling design strata, V023. Another country specific variable is used for the sample domains or the departments, variable "shdepto".
