Zimbabwe DHS2005-06, Variable v705, category for women with unemployed husbands/partners [message #11230] Sat, 19 November 2016 08:06 Go to next message

I am analysing DHS 2005-06 for Zimbabwe, Individual Recode [ZWIR51FL] as one of the datasets in my study of fertility change in the country. One of the variables I am interested in is 'occupation of husband/partner', found in variable v705. The categories of the variable v705 however do not include those with unemployed husbands/partners. The other datasets [1994, 1999, 2010-11] include the category for women with unemployed husbands/partners in variable v705, a very important characteristic in my study. I would therefore like to know if it can be that all the women enumerated in DHS 2005-06 had employed husbands/partners or there is a variable in the same dataset that contains data about unemployed partners. I have tried looking at v704 but it also does not have the category. Could the absence of women who have unemployed husbands/partners be a data capture/coding error?

I look forward to your assistance.

Thank you

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

Thanks very much for catching this. It was indeed a coding error. In that survey, according to Keith Purvis, one of the DHS Data Processing experts" "Non-working cases were wrongly coded as "998:DK" in v704 and v705. I have corrected the error in the new version of the data file." I believe that a new version of the Stata file, which would be called ZWIR52FL.dta, will be put onto the website sometime next week. Let us know if it does not come up by 12/2.

I am very grateful for the quick action taken to rectify the 2005-06 ZImbabwe DHS. I have douwnloaded the dataset and indeed, as circulated via email communication, my variable of interest [v705] has been corrected, among other improvements made on other subsets of the survey

Thank you.
