Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
If a variable label includes "na", for "Not Applicable" that means the question for it was omitted from the questionnaire. The decision to omit the question (and variable) was made by the country, not by DHS staff. The data were not collected.

I am working on the DHS (2018 and 2012-2013) and MIS (2021 and 2015) Mali data and I have checked all the variable contained in those datasets.
In order to perform the analysis needed for my study, I'll need a variable indicating the town of residence and in the aforementioned datasets I have found the (v026) na - de facto place of residence variable that seems to be exactly what I could use but there are no observations.
I would hence like to know if there is a way I could access that information and what is the necessary procedure.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Bests regards,
Jessica

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
You want to know where the respondents in the 2014 survey were living in 2017? We have no information about that. We also do not know where the respondents to the 2017 survey were living in 2014. The 2017 survey does include a variable for type of place (city / town / countryside) of previous residence but I would use it with caution because the classification is different from current type of place (urban / rural).

I want to identify the relocations happened to the individuals surveyed in Bangladesh in year 2014 by 2017 survey.
Is there a variable for this about where they were before in DHS.
Thank you in advance!

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
All of these variables are in the KR file. (I am not sure what you mean by "breast variables" but the KR includes breastfeeding data and the mother's age and education.) If you have other questions about the data files, please tell us which survey you are using.]]>Bridgette-DHS2023-09-27T12:39:28-00:00How can I merge the databases?

How can I merge the databases and get that information?
thank you for your time]]>jcts1809@gmail.com2023-09-25T16:24:45-00:00Re: Sierra Leone Dataset
https://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.phpindex.php?t=rview&goto=27323&th=12956#msg_27323
Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
Chiefdom was probably included during the implementation of the survey because it helped identify the locality, but it was probably omitted from the data set because the survey was not designed to give representative estimates at that level. And it is unlikely that all of the chiefdoms were visited during data collection.
At any rate, we do not have any data files that include chiefdom. It is not possible to recover the missing codes.
